It's time to move on

About ten years ago we
left Edmonton Alberta.
We simply packed up and moved to the west coast on a whim that Beautiful Vancouver on the West Coast of Canada was where we wanted to live the rest of our lives. Hell, we didn’t even care if we lived right in Vancouver, as long as we could smell the ocean, we were happy.
So our journey would begin, renting houses all over the Lower Mainland. We thoroughly enjoyed living in Port Moody then on to Coquitlam, out to Maple Ridge then all the way across the Mainland to Richmond, to the other side of the Airport in Kerrisdale then on to East Van, and then over the bridge to Surrey, followed by an acerage home in Langley. I know...I know...we moved around a lot in a span of five years...and no we’re not with the circus!
Now being the Carnies that we so proudly are, we then moved across a small chunk of the Pacific Ocean, to Victoria, the Capital of British Columbia on the southern most tip of Vancouver Island.
Although we loved the entire experience, the last year we spent there was by far the best. You see, that last year was spent in a beautiful home on View Royal Ave in Victoria. This was definately the best year of our lives.
I can still remember waking up to the vaulted ceilings held high by giant windows stretching from floor to ceiling. As if this house wasn’t nice enough, the view was something out of a Robert Bateman painting. No! Seriously! Straight out in the bay was a lighthouse that sat on the tip of a point of land where a national park happens to also reside. I wish I could remember the name...oh well I’ll add that as a comment later if I remember.
Anyways back to the view. A few times a day we were fortunate enought to see all kinds of Navy Ships, Barges, Float Planes, and occasionally the odd cruise ship effortlessly float by. Frequently we would catch ourselves in the middle of a smirk, glancing at each other then back at the ocean as we simultaneously giggled We’re Sooo Fuc#@ng Lucky...
Why we decided to move back to Alberta is beyond me. Oh yah my wife just reminded me... Family! We felt a bit removed from our parents (both sets) and numerous other relatives that we left behind in Alberta. So back to Alberta we jaunted with Uhaul in tow. We rented a couple of houses back in Edmonton before settling in to our new home (not new to me of course) where I was raised and where my Parents had j ust moved out of.
Everything went well at first! Slowly though, memories of childhood tradgedy starting creeping into my brain. Twenty years had gone by since I lost my brother to a violent murder which I thought I was completely at peace with. But this house held alot of pain inside it’s walls. While a grieving family tried to look ok on the outside, years passed, family healed, good memories replaced bad.
Until now I always thought that time was the major part of the healing process, but have more recently become aware that distance played an important role too. I feel like I am regressing instead of evolving, that suddenly I am seeing life through the eyes of that traumatized 12yr old boy. That obstacles are more focused while dreams are blurring. What happened to that guy that loved life! Where did this old me come from. I thought I changed, infact I know I did.
It’s this damn house, this dirty city, full of energy, only not the good kind. I need to get the hell out of here. I need to get back to the ocean. I can hear it calling. Is this crazy? A bit maybe. I don’t know! What I do know is I can live where ever I want and Edmonton isn’t it. So with this I bid Edmonton farewell. The plan has been written, the map been drawn, the wheels set in motion, WE ARE MOVING BACK TO THE WEST COAST... HOORAY!
In the next weeks and months you will witness a family of 9.5 research, plan, save, pack, map, and finally move our family across the rocky mountains to our new home near the ocean.

The all time greatest Kitchen tips! After the feast...
10/07/08 12:03 Filed in: Washing
Dishes
Cooking for large
families always involves the least favorite chore of
all time and that's dishes, I absolutely hate doing
dishes. Not to say that I'm bad at them, in fact, quite
the opposite is true. I have learned over the years
that dishes are one household chore that requires
special attention and believe it or not organization. I
am in the process of teaching my teens some very basic
tricks to turn this burden into an efficient process
that won't leave them at the end of their wits, so to
speak.
I taught this to them years ago when they started cleaning the kitchen after dinner, and never considered they might need a bit of a refresher course. My wife and I have fallen into the habit of passing through the kitchen to yell a few words ofridicule encouragement. Not that this isn't
effective. It's just that after a few years of being
responsible for cleaning the kitchen, their skills
should be improving not regressing. What you don’t
believe me? Let me say it again. When my two oldest
daughter’s turned 10 the after dinner kitchen duties
became their responsibility. Maybe we started them off
a little young but that is one area of life that we are
completely comfortable with them growing up to fast in.
I don't understand why kids would rather goof around poking and prodding each other into hysterical fits of laughter than just getting their chores done so they can have time to themselves. Did I really jusk ask that? Of course goofing around is funner, but who wants mom and dad bitching at them for hours on end? No seriously, sometimes they take hours to finish what should be a 20-30 minute job at most. I have come to learn that the kitchen can be a little daunting after prepping, cooking and serving up a meal for 9 people, not to mention what ever dishes have accumulated throughout the day. So the time has come for a bit of a refresher that goes a little something like this.
Huddle up the team for some words of wisdom!
The trick is to get yourself a game plan and stick to it. Stand back and take a look at the whole picture and put the individual tasks in order. Hopefully, the table has been cleared by your younger siblings and the left overs have been put away by your super cheap Dad.
1. First, you always try to remove the bulk of the mess with the least amount of work first. Your first priority is always to remove the pot/pans and large serving bowls from the picture to get a better look at the rest of the mess. Just stack them up in a neat pile and place them aside.
2. Next tackle all the cans, jars, and recyclable containers. Get them to the recycle bin and continue at the mess.
3. Now fill a large bowl with hot water and separate all the cutlery and small dirty items and place them in it to soak.
4. Now is time to open the garbage and scrape off all the scraps, while running the hot water over them for a quick rinse. Now open up the dishwasher and start loading. By the time you are done loading the cups, glasses, and rinsed plates the mess is nearly done.
5. Breath a sigh of relief, you are nearly there.
6. Now to get yourself a dish cloth and wipe down the sink(s) and fill it with hot soapy water. You can now use this cloth to wipe down the table and counters.
7. Now to start the dishwasher and hand wash all the dishes that didn’t fit. Doh! Yah I said hand wash, not pile up the largest items in a neat pile and leave them for the morning, WASH THEM NOW!
8. Last but not least is to sweep the floor...
There! You’re done and Mom and Dad will be so proud, you should be too!
Now get your butt up to your room and study!

Music, the greatest gift to give a child.
21/06/08 13:51 Filed in: Music
About 5 yrs ago we bought our kids an acoustic guitar.
I’d love to tell you that they picked it right up and
started playing beautiful music, but the truth is they
hardly played the thing. To start with, we had no idea
how to tune it. The kids twanged away for a few days
and very quickly lost interest.
This guitar became many things over the next few years. Some days it was a sword chasing the kids around the room, weilded by the valiant prince known better to me as my oldest son. Some days it was a sea creature, being slayen by pirates as it got tossed around, case and all, from floor to couch and back to floor again.
I have rescued that guitar from all sorts of predicaments. For some reason this guitar did not want to die, it had an important lesson to teach us that we were not aware of till very recently.
This lesson came to us as a friend request on facebook. It turns out that my childhood family friend, Lane Arndt started teaching guitar lessons right here in Edmonton. He is the creator and cheif instructor of Forward Momentum Music. As his site loaded and his music began to play, my wife looked over at me and said what are you listening to, I love it. I showed her his site and some photos of Lane proudly hanging his sign outside his new business at 10702-124st.
We knew at that very moment that this guitar that had lasted through all these battles, was about to suit up and go to war. My oldest’s son and his guitar would soon be in lessons with Lane. Within five 1/2hour sessions my son had developped a genuine interest in playing the guitar. I don’t think I would have been able to beat that into him, no matter how much I tried. It was important for him to spend time with someone that had a genuine love for this stringed instument.
So thanx Lane for introducing my son to the world of music, I am confident that he will carry this interest with him through his entire life.

The stubbed toe diaries.
15/06/08 19:14 Filed in: Complaining
Ok.
Call me insensitive but
“I think your toe will hurt less, the less you complain about it!“
This is a phrase I have mumbled under my breath a number of times since my second oldest daughter stubbed her toe a couple days ago. I admit it, I'm not a sympathetic guy in most cases, although my wife is constantly reminding me what a big baby I am when I'm sick or injured.
Why is it that when it's someone else that needs a little sympathy, my first unshakeable instinct is to say "toughen up" or "suck it up princess". Is this a guy thing? Is it this lack of compasion that makes most men feel like it's the wife's job to tend to the kids emotions? I can't say for sure but one thing I do know is that a kid needs a balance of sensitivity and brutal honesty if they are gonna stand any chance of surviving and thriving in today's world.
So after hearing it for what seemed like the hundredth time today, I told her to keep a diary of everything she feels like saying out loud. I said, "for example, in the last 45 minutes your diary would have read,
12:15pm - Ow! my toe hurts, it's throbbing like crazy, daddy why does it hurt.
12:20pm - Ohhh! Owwweeee! I just bumped my toe on the heal of my other foot, it hurts so much.
12:25pm - Phone rings and pain inflicted child who was moments ago acting like she was on her death bed, suddenly forgets about her toe to giggle and fart around on the phone for 20 minutes completely oblivious to any problem with the before mentioned toe.
12:45pm - My friend thinks I should go to the doctor incase it's broken. Owwwweeee it hurts!
1:00pm - What do you mean I should sit down and raise my foot and put ice on it, that hurts too much!
This is what your diary would look like for the past 45 minutes, I told her! Whether you complain about it or not the pain isn't going to change. You won’t listen to me and put your damn foot up with ice on it, yet I have to listen to you all day long. Go and do as I said, lay down on the couch with a pillow under your leg with an ice pack on your toe. I then escorted her to the couch and gave her a notepad and pencil. Here is your new “stubbed toe diary” I said. Write all your complaints in it all day and later tonight I will sit and hold you while you read it to me. Now let me get some work done!
I often wonder if this is the best strategy for preparing them to go out into the real world? I understand that I must take the sensitive side at times, but being compassionate all day long for days on end is an impossible feat. I would rather tell her to get her foot up, put some ice on it and do something consructive to get your mind off it. It’s funny that I expect the exact opposite treatment when I’m down and out.
Talking about this with my wife, she suggested I read “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” by John Gray.
I’m a few chapters in and I’ve got to say it’s absolutely brillliant. I am already rethinking everything I say before I say it. I’m going to have to start seeing life through the eyes of a venetian if I want to better understand this housefull of 6 women that my two sons and I are blessed to be a part of.

A new breed of parenting

Every time we meet someone new and they find out that
we both work from home, we get one of two reactions.
The more common of the two is how do you get anything
done with so many kids to distract you? The second one
we get is ”Don’t you drive each other crazy?”
We usually lie and say that we love spending every minute together, but the truth is that everyone needs a little space. We break up schedule so that we get a few hours apart daily. We’ll even take turns with the kids to give the other a little time to breathe...
